Pele helps Brazil to World Cup title
On June 29, 1958, Brazil defeats host nation Sweden 5-2 to win its first World Cup. Brazil came into the tournament as a favorite, and did not disappoint, thrilling the world with their spectacular play, which was often referred to as the "beautiful game."
The star of the tournament was an undersized midfielder named Edson Arondes do Nascimento, known the world over as Pele. Edson, the son of a professional footballer called Dodhino, was named for the American inventor, Thomas Edison. His mother, having watched her husband struggle to earn money in the game, discouraged Pele from playing football. Pele’s will won out, and at 14 he was discovered by de Brito, a former Brazilian team member, who took the young scorer under his wing. Pele earned his first cap with the national team at 16, and made his debut on the international stage at the 1958 World Cup in Sweden at 17 years old.
In that year’s Cup, Pele did not make an appearance until Brazil’s third group play match against the Soviet Union, in which he set up a goal for Vava. His first goal came in the quarterfinal against Wales; it was the only goal Brazil scored in a 1-0 win. It was in the semifinal against France, though, that Pele truly came into his own. As the crowd at Rasunda Stadium listened to the Sweden-West Germany game on their radios, Pele put on a show of offensive brilliance against the second best team in the tournament. He scored three goals from his left side, and left the French team dumbfounded at their inability to contain a 17 year old. Pele and Vava scored two goals each in the final. Upon receiving the Jules Rimet Cup as the best team in the world, the entire team wept.
Brazil went on to win the World Cup again in 1966 and 1970, which gave them the right to retain the Jules Rimet Cup permanently as the first country to win three World Cups. In 1999, the International Olympic Committee honored Pele along with 10 others as one of the best athletes of the century

Massa, not bad and in fact , I'm impressed. I had you pegged as a evangelical right wing fanatic, only, but gladly there is more to you than meets the eye.

America's team have been trained to be physically fit, dive when necessary, rely on free kicks and hold opponents in the penalty area. On top of that they wait for mistakes and pounce. Now these attributes must be applauded, but skill is what they will always lack.

Germany did beat England today, and firmly and convincingly. I did think that England had a chance , based on player $ worth, but then america with no nonentities held them to a draw.

Argentina did not and could not lose to Mexico, but somethings i saw do not bode well for Argentina. I would love Argentina & Maradonna to win the world cup, but only if they deserve it.

Unfortunately, Chile cannot beat Brazil, for they are too small and too ignorant. 3 starters out and Robinho relishing the meet, because small players makes him shine, but at Manchester City, this year, he was a joke.

The coach of Brazil must be credited for selecting a certain amount of brute force & ignorance for Brazil is not football anymore, but fouls and speed in counter attack. They are also well versed in the skill of 'crying foul". Well done Dunga!

With no defence & a has-been in Sabastien Veron(midfield), i still think that Argentina will overcome Germany on Saturday, just because they are by far more skillful on the ball.

But the team to beat is Brazil, with the right combination of skill and over-sized brawn. You are right that Holland does not have a chance, but only Argentina has a chance against Brazil. I hope that Portugal put it to them, for at that time: 'WE ALL PUTAGEE'!THEY MIGHT MEET THEM AGAIN AND THEY JUST MIGHT DO IT.

hey you 'Umpa-Lumpa', you don't get tyard banna? You gonna poison your body with toxic chemical imbalances that will have all your teeth falling out soon. And your face will bruk out with eczema, and it won't be from the red ants you got living in your bed. Every country think they have what it takes to win the world cup, that's why there's so much weeping and knashing of teeth every four years by rabid/devoted fans. I just love how every four years most humans around the planet can read tea leaves, and also possess 20/30 vision deep inside a sphere made of cheap plastic from China. Just google 'predictions for world cup 2010' and you will tek in with the shyttings almost simultaneously. So many fools have this 'itch' to holla for some team they know can't or won't win but they holla like fools anyway. Ghana is fast and much better than the US, but had they used the wings instead of going down the center so often the US could have won that game. Germany will beat England today I think. Argentina could lose to mexico. Slovakia could beat holland Chile could beat Brazil Paraguay will most likely beat Japan...if they don't go to penalty kicks. Portugal will beat Spain. This cup goes to south America this year.

What happen to these people in here? nobody like soccer? We have the Guyana women's soccer team kicking butt and you would think that we Guyanese should be proud nuh...

I waited a long time to see this, much more than necessary. But one would not derive this from the north American coverage of the world cup. From that , you would think that america is the team to beat, never mind Brazil/Argentina/ Spain or the rest, who live for football, rightly so.

But to hear the constant drivel of the american team' prowess, when only 3 or 4 or them play for any team of small significance, and even then resigned to mere secondary roles, epitomizes the ridiculous covered belief that america is anything but : "punt & run', 'kick & hope' & rely on jumping on mistakes & bullying -at the right moments, is what america's football team is.

America has spent a lot of money to promote this team, and seeing slippery bill with mick jagger in the stands, did not seem right, for mick let the fans of the rolling stones down.

But such is america, that you rely on morons to promote you, and a foolish belief that you are better than others.

My suggestion is that you go back to the games you play amongst yourselves, like the world series/super bowl or whatever the basketball finals are named. You are the very best when you play against yourselves.

The toughest test Barcelona will face in their bid for the second European Champion's Cup is tomorrow against Inter-Milan of Italy. This most beautiful of games, spearheaded of Barcelona by the Greatest Lionel Messi, is up against the possible greatest manager in Portuguese Mourinho. This is a man that coaches in Italy, but spurns them for their superior airs, as to be Italian. This man comprehensively outwitted the Italian coach Ancelotti of Chelsea(England) in the quarter finals, to advance, by wit, humour and psychology. But he is most deadly in setting up a team to destroy an opponent.

I do not wish him well in this endeavor tomorrow, but anyone who knows this game will look upon a spectacle, that has many turns & twists with great relish. But Barcelona all the way!

Well half the second leg of the quarter finals of the European championship went down today, with the greatest soccer player since Maradonna; Lionel MESSI putting 4 goals into the English pretenders of true football-Arsenal.

No doubt that English football has come a great way, in recent years, thanks to the influx of International players, but Barcelona & Messi of Spain reign supreme.

Messi is the only player that has the talent/gifts/intelligence and grit to equal the feats of the greatest soccer player that ever lived-Maradonna!

Were it not for Peckerman-the Argentinian coach at the last world cup, who did not play Messi(18 yrs) against Germany, Argentina might well have won the world cup. It is possible that peckerman was just a coward or paid off, but his name always seplt trouble for the great Argentina.

Maradonna is now the coach of Argentina and still has to set up Messi to flow like the greatest wine, in the world.

Brazil has been deadly effective in a German type system where hard /fouling/tackling has been there reason for success.

But gone is the beautiful game, which Argentina now plays, and maybe this beauty will be revealed at this year's world cup.

Well today in Europe, the final two games of the quarter finals for the European Championship, is over. Inter Milan 1-0 at home to CSKA Moscow & Arsenal at home- 2-2 to Barcelona.

Next week will see the second leg played in reverse venues. Coach Mourinho of Inter Milan should have seen CSKA off instead of 1-0, but despite the artificial turf in Moscow, Inter should progress to the semi-finals.

In BARCELONA/ARSENAL game, possession was 72% Barcelona, with Arsenal making up the rest, often telling the English press how good they are at 'true' football. They took 16 shots against their net in the first half and should have been down 3-zip.

In the first 15 minutes of the second half, Barcelona scored twice, but the game ended up tied.

Soccer is a very frustrating game, sometimes, and Barcelona clearly was the masters of the game. The scoreline says otherwise:2-2.

I have no doubt that next week Barcelona will win and move on to the semi-finals, but on that Saturday next they face Real Madrid, tied in the Spanish league for first. Today they should just have dismissed Arsenal as the pretenders they are, but now have to expend more to win next week, in the return leg.

On Tuesday, Manchester United scored within seconds to take the lead against Bayern Munich, but spent the rest of the entire game in a complete disarray. Beaten 2-1, i have no idea how they are going to come back, but they are playing at Manu 9second leg),but then Rooney seems to be injured.

Manchester has more problems, in that they face Chelsea, on Saturday, and the winner of this might well be the English Premier league Champion for 2010.

More to come.

Yes, Coach Dunga has set the tone for the Brazilian team by winning all before him previous, but is it enough to suffice in South Africa, this June?

This Brazilian team is far removed from playing the 'Beautiful' game, as it was in the past. No defense and strictly beautiful skill in scoring more goals, than the opponent. Goalie and defense was an afterthought.

But then Zico/Socrates was humbled/humliated by Paulo Rossi & Italy in 1986, that showed them what defense & counter attack really was.

Today, Dunga has a Brazilian team that does not play beautiful football anymore, but churns out wins. Aggressive defense tackling with a counter attack that has proven deadly to opponents. But it is the brutal tackling that Dunga relies on that is most disturbing.

Brazil can win with this lethal technique, as most German squads have systematically employed , in the past, to success.

I believe that this world cup will see Dunga's brutal approach to get results backfire, and the beautiful game brought to life again , by Lionel Messi and Argentina, and Maradonna (Coach).

Pele talks about Ronaldo of Portugal & Robinho ( ex-Manchester City)outclassing Messi of Barcelona/Argentina. Dunga even said previous; 'that you hear what Pele says and do the opposite'.

However to see the last 8 goals of Messi is to witness greatness on a level that is up there with the very best.

Rooney of England is a superb player and the Italian coach Capello has done a wonderful job. But too much problems in the back for England, from injuries and other nefarious deeds, will probably see them outed in the quarter finals.

Spain has the most complete talent, but the coach argones is an old fool , like Domenech of france, letting down France always, but getting by because of ancestry. I think that Argentina will win this world cup, not just because of Messi, but because Argentina plays the 'beautiful' game.

Let's get the world cup rolling with dialogue!
