LOS ANGELES (Reuters Life!) – Michael Jackson lost the will to live in recent years, a former close confidante said yesterday, as scores of fans camped out to be the first to see the singer’s final appearance in the This is It movie.
Rabbi Shmuley Boteach, appearing on NBC’s “Today” show, unveiled lengthy conversations he taped with Jackson during their 1999-2001 friendship, and said the “Thriller” singer suffered deep emotional pain. “He lost the will to live,” Boteach said. “I think he was just going through the motions of life toward the end.”
Boteach also said that Jackson, who had plastic surgery several times, once confessed that he didn’t want to appear in public, because he felt that he looked like a “lizard.”
Jackson died in Los Angeles on June 25 of a prescription drug overdose, less three weeks before he was due to begin a series of 50 sold-out comeback shows in London.
Back in March, when Jackson visited London to announce the “This Is It” shows, he appeared in a military-style jacket and punched the air. But the tapes collected by Boteach show Jackson to be a far less confidant man, who feared growing old and had suffered levels of loneliness and pain that the rabbi said “staggers the imagination.”
“I would like some way to disappear, where people don’t see me anymore at some point,” Jackson said in the tapes.
“I don’t want to grow old. I never want to look in the mirror and see that,” the singer said.
Boteach has turned his conversations with the pop star into a book, published yesterday, called The Michael Jackson Tapes. Boteach’s book comes as Jackson’s fans lined up in Los Angeles three days before tickets go on sale tomorrow for the October 28 release worldwide of This Is It. The movie is based on footage of Jackson rehearsing for his London shows and demand is expected to be strong for the two-week limited release.
Some 200 fans were camped out yesterday, across the street from where Jackson had his final rehearsals, waiting to buy tickets to the movie premiere. The waiting fans will also get commemorative tickets designed by Jackson for the now cancelled London shows.

This is all so terribly tragic. A young life lost so senselessly. And you guys don't help with the music. Of course the tears start falling. At least now he can rest in peace.

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- Seventy days after his sudden death, Michael Jackson will be interred in what may or may not be his final resting place Thursday evening.
Only his family and closest friends will attend the private funeral inside the ornate Great Mausoleum on the grounds of Forest Lawn cemetery in Glendale, California.
The news media, which has closely covered every aspect of Jackson's death, will be kept at a distance, with cameras no closer than the cemetery's main gate.
Little is known about the planned ceremony, though CNN has confirmed that singer Gladys Knight, a longtime friend to Jackson, will perform. Her song has not been disclosed.
The massive mausoleum, which is normally open to tourists, was closed Wednesday as preparations were completed for the funeral. A security guard blocking its entrance said it would reopen to the public on Friday.
Fans of Clark Gable, Carole Lombard and dozens of other celebrities buried on the grounds have flocked to Forest Lawn-Glendale for decades, but Jackson may outdraw them all.
It is unclear how close tourists will be allowed to Jackson's resting place. Security guards -- aided by cameras -- keep a constant vigil over the graves and crypts, which are surrounded by a world-class collection of art and architecture.
The Forest Lawn Web site boasts that the mausoleum, which draws its architectural inspiration from the Campo Santo in Italy, "has been called the "New World's Westminster Abbey" by Time Magazine.
Visitors will see "exact replicas of Michelangelo's greatest works such as David, Moses, and La Pieta" and "Leonardo da Vinci's immortal Last Supper re-created in brilliant stained glass; two of the world's largest paintings," the Web site says.
Jackson's burial has been delayed by division among Jackson family members, though it was matriarch Katherine Jackson who would make the final decision, brother Jermaine Jackson recently told CNN.
He preferred to see his youngest brother laid to rest at his former Neverland Ranch home, north of Los Angeles in Santa Barbara County, California.
That idea was complicated by neighbors who vowed to oppose allowing a grave in the rural area -- and by Jackson family members who said the singer would not want to return to the home where he faced child molestation charges, of which he was ultimately acquitted.
The mystery of where Michael Jackson would be buried became a media obsession in the weeks after his death.
After his body was loaded onto a helicopter at UCLA's Ronald Reagan Medical Center hours following his June 25 death, it stayed in the custody of the Los Angeles County coroner for an autopsy.
It was only later disclosed that Jackson's corpse was kept in a refrigerated room at the Hollywood Hills Forest Lawn cemetery until his casket was carried by motorcade to downtown Los Angeles for a public memorial service in the Staples Center arena.
Again, speculation about Jackson's whereabouts grew when the media lost track of his casket after his brothers carried it out of sight inside the arena. Though the family has not publicly confirmed where the body was taken, most reports placed it back at the Hollywood Hills Forest Lawn while awaiting his family's decision.
Though Thursday's interment may settle one Michael Jackson mystery, a more serious one remains. The coroner announced last week that he had ruled Jackson's death a homicide. A summary of the coroner's report said the anesthetic propofol and the sedative lorazepam were the primary drugs responsible for the singer's death.

LOS ANGELES – A law enforcement official tells The Associated Press that the Los Angeles County coroner has ruled Michael Jackson's death a homicide.
The finding makes it more likely criminal charges will be filed against the doctor who was with the pop star when he died.
The official says the coroner determined a fatal combination of drugs was given to Jackson hours before he died in his rented Los Angeles mansion on June 25. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the findings have not been publicly released.
Forensic tests found the powerful anesthetic propofol in Jackson's system along with two sedatives, the official says.
Dr. Conrad Murray, Jackson's personal physician, is the target of a manslaughter probe headed by Los Angeles police.
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Michael Jackson won't be laid to rest on what would have been his 51st birthday after all.
A spokesman for the Jackson family says the King of Pop's funeral has been postponed until Sept. 3, five days after the singer's birthday.
Spokesman Ken Sunshine, in a statement Friday, offered no reason for the delay.
Jackson's family had planned a private daytime service for Aug. 29. The pop superstar will now be interred in The Great Mausoleum at Forest Lawn-Glendale at a private evening ceremony.
The cemetery is spread over several hills on land roughly 8 miles north of downtown Los Angeles. The mausoleum includes a stained-glass replica of Leonardo da Vinci's "The Last Supper" and replicas of Michelangelo's statues.
Singer, who died June 25, will have private ceremony on Aug. 29

LOS ANGELES - The “King of Pop” will be buried on what would have been his 51st birthday, a spokesman for Michael Jackson’s family said Tuesday.
Jackson will be buried at a private ceremony at Forest Lawn-Glendale on Aug. 29, spokesman Ken Sunshine said in a statement. Guests will be limited to family and close friends, Sunshine said.
“The Jackson family once again wishes to express its gratitude to Michael’s fans around the world for their support during these difficult times,” the statement said.
Details about the ceremony and the whereabouts of Jackson’s body have been tightly guarded. The announcement came a day after the New York Daily News reported comments by Jackson’s father, Joe Jackson, that his son would be buried on what would have been his birthday.
Sunshine said Jackson will be buried on the Holly Terrace at the cemetery’s Great Mausoleum. The cemetery’s Web site describes the mausoleum as featuring replicas of works by Michelangelo. It also features a stained glass recreation of Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper.”
The cemetery is located in the city of Glendale, which is about 8 miles north of downtown Los Angeles. It is a different location from the Hollywood Hills cemetery where Jackson’s family was seen gathering days after his death on June 25.
A Forest Lawn spokesman said the cemetery does not comment on private funeral services.
On this his 'memorial' Day I ask that we use this thread only for the next 24 hrs in memory of Michael Jackson. This is our Tribute to Mike who will forever live in our hearts.
We would love you Mike.
Michael Jackson. -1958 – 2009
We loved the 5 year old and saw him in a glowing light, his good qualities dominated the foreground of our perception and we saw no negative qualities. We enjoyed him with all his imperfections and we watched him grow into a worldwide superstar. Those of us that truly loved him understood that he was a combination of divine and human qualities and understood his struggle and yet we loved him and from that our love grew. We had no idealized projection and we saw him as he truly was: the boy, the extremely talented dancer, the amazing singer, the choreographer, the father, the humanitarian, the man with such a large heart, the person who was searching for that wonder in his youth (see "Childhood" composed and sang by Michael Jackson) and the author who wrote about saving Katy from the evil Mr. Big who is planning on getting the children of the world addicted to drugs.
That was the Michael we knew, loved and understood. For those of us that loved him he was not strange but struggling, he was not weird but different and certainly pushed the envelope. David Lynch, said: "I love ideas, and everything starts with an idea--a piece of furniture, a painting, a piece of music. If you could expand your consciousness, you can catch ideas at a deeper level." Michael did exactly that month after month, year after year and the music not yet released will undoubtedly show that he continued to expand his consciousness. Unfortunately, Michael did not have the chance to develop emotionally, to become an adult, to be normal, so I pray that in tribute to him we continue to love his music and not the mayhem surrounding it.
No more STRUGGLES WITH THE MAN IN THE MIRROR, his SABBATH is now here and we pray that he REST IN PEACE knowing he was loved and will continue to be loved.

The song I think of that is fitting to MJ's life.....Candle in the wind" by Elton John..
And it seems to me you lived your life Like a candle in the wind Never knowing who to cling to When the rain set in And I would have liked to have known you But I was just a kid Your candle burned out long before Your legend ever did
Loneliness was tough The toughest role you ever played Hollywood created a superstar And pain was the price you paid Even when you died Oh the press still hounded you

Sad sad day. Michael, you have given us so much. Including these wannabe 'mikes' like usher, Justin Timberlake, Chris brown, and every other boy band that ever came about after you changed the music world for ever. This world is sad today. Andrew can you find 'she's out of my life' and embed it please?
Most of us grew up with him, love him and definitely appreciated his music. Michael Jackson will live forever in our hearts through his music and the memories we all share of this true Icon..
Rest in peace Mike, you are and will always be loved..
