As a result of last night's fire in the Mahdia district, where there is no fire service and for the most part nature took it's course! I am sharing the following received via a Facebook group. I hope some or all of us think about helping.
"Dear Colleagues and Friends,
A large fire ravaged through the community of Mahdia claiming 25 properties, mainly businesses that serve the community. There are no confirmed reports of loss of life however the losses to personal property is enormous. The people of Mahdia need your support now more than ever. Youth Challenge Guyana is kindly asking your support with contributions that would aid the families of who would have lost most or all of what they own to this devastation.
Your donations can be delivered to our office at anytime before 18.00hrs or you can call us on 223-7884 or 225-0129 or email dnicholson@ycgi.org. The Chairman of the Region has noted that the immediate needs are: - Food and water - Clothing - tarpaulins and plastic - rope - Sleeping Cots or Mattresses - Bedding items - Boxes for storage
We at Youth Challenge Guyana wish to extend our thoughts and prayers to the residents of Mahdia, its town officials, and the brave residents who were combating the blaze which claimed 25 buildings and left many persons in a quest shelter.
For those of you attending our Brunch in 2009 in Toronto you would have heard me proudly focus attention on alumnus Yvonne (Joseph) Triesman, receiver of a Humanitarian Mission award presented to her in appreciation of her dedication and commitment to the people of Guyana.
Yvonne visited Guyana in June 2009 on a “Building Bridges: Making a Difference” American-Canadian medical mission, led by Atlanta-based paediatrician and close friend, Dr. Claudette Heyliger-Thomas. She was part of the Canadian team, based in Georgetown, who treated over 900 patients of all ages, suffering mainly from diabetes, high blood pressure and ear infections. The group held a conference for the Guyanese physicians at the hotel, and visited the obstetric and paediatric wards at the Georgetown Hospital, presenting moms and children with stuffed bears. They also held clinics at Parika and Fort Wellington. She was instrumental in recruiting medical volunteers in her area to go on the trip which she stated was very rewarding. "Guyana is very important to me,” said Yvonne. “That is why I continue to help out.” The group also visited St. Ann’s Orphanage and donated funds, clothing and 56 bears to the children.
During her trip to Parika, Yvonne's group encountered a 31 year old father, Kwesi, with a life threatening illness. He has a tumour in his right jaw which will eventually cut off his air supply. A Head and Neck physician in London, Ontario has agreed to perform the surgery. The anaesthologist has agreed to waive his fee however they need to raise $60,000.00 Cdn for his 2 week hospital stay and accomodation during his recuperation as well as other hospital costs. His airfare is being covered by a Guyanese businessman.
On behalf of Yvonne and the team, they are appealing to you for any donation to help this project be a successful one for this young man and father. He is one of many in need of help however his case touched the hearts of the team.
Tax Receipts will be issued for donations over $20.00 by the Guyana Burn & Health Care Foundation - a registered charity which has taken on this project and cheques need to be written in their name.
If you wish you may also make a donation through our website at www.strosestoronto.org using Paypal and we will forward your donation to Yvonne's team. Don't forget to indicate your name and address so that we may send you a receipt.

I believe we can help with this simple request for free food for the animals..
Thanks,
Mark
The Animal Rescue Site is having trouble getting enough people to click on it daily so they can meet their quota of getting FREE FOOD donated every day to abused and neglected animals. It takes less than a minute (about 15 seconds) to go to their site and click on the purple box 'fund food for animals for free'. This doesn't cost you a thing. Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising. Here's the web site! http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com/
I am a Breast Cancer survivor and I am participating in the Avon Breast Cancer Walk at Jones, Beach Long Island on October 18, 2009. I am asking all my friends if they can make a donate to my team in support of my participation.

The Guyanese American Cultural Association of Central Florida (GACACF) teamed up with the Guyanese owned Caribbean Supercenter Supermarket and the Guyanese American community in Orlando, Florida to bring cheer to more than two dozen senior citizens who are residents of the Health Central Park NursingHome, and who are without relatives to visit and share giftsduring the festive season.
The Home is located in Winter Garden, Central Florida, a City that is home to an increasing number of Guyanese immigrants, including the world’s current number one test cricket batsman, Shivnarine Chanderpaul. It is against this backdrop that Caroline Baker, wife of the current president of the GACACF, Victor Baker, conceived the Joint Holiday Project under which a visit was paid and gifts given to 26 residents of the Home who are without relatives and friends with whom to share the Holiday Season.
In conjunction with Naraine and Rosemarie Moonasar, owners of Caribbean Supercenter Supermarket, a Christmas tree was placed at the busy supermarket with angels bearing the names of the senior citizens and the required gift for each person. Members of the Guyanese American community were encouraged to pick an angel and donate the wrapped gift to the GACACF.The response was overwhelming.
On Monday, December 21, a team from the GACACF including Mrs. Baker and her husband Victor and their two children, Carol Singh, Osweena Lyking and Wesley Kirton spent the afternoon visiting with the 26 senior citizens, none of whom are Guyanese. Two recipients were Caribbean immigrants.
The team handed over the gifts while chatting with the senior citizens most of whom had never heard of or were too old to remember a country named Guyana. They were informed about Guyana and the Guyanese American community in Central Florida.
“It’s so nice that people from another country would bring me gifts for Christmas. God bless you all and bless the people of your country,” said Ellie, whose comment reflected the sentiments of all those who received gifts.
Chairman of the Board of GACACF, Wesley Kirton, thanked Mrs. Baker and the executive committee of the organization for initiating a project which “clearly demonstrates that the Guyanese American community is a caring one which seeks to assist not only its immediate community and charities back home but also the wider community in which we live in Florida.” He thanked the management and staff of Caribbean Supercenter Supermarket for once again supporting a worthy cause initiated by the Caribbean American community as well as all those who donated the gifts.
In addition to the team that visited, Sammy and Guenet Roberts, K.P. Singh and George Lyking also played pivotal roles in ensuring the success of the project.

As many of you may know, our family has been affected by this terrible disease. We lost my dad seven years ago to pancreatic cancer and over this past year Trevor (my husband) has been battling Lymphoma.
The Canadian Cancer Society Relay for Life is an overnight non-competitive relay that celebrates cancer survivors and pays tribute to the lives of loved ones. It involves teams of 10 people who take turns walking, running or strolling around a track to raise money to support the work of the Canadian Cancer Society. It's a night of fun, friendship and fundraising to beat cancer. We have put together a team for this year's relay. Nine of our family members along with a few friends are participating in the event. Funds raised through Relay for Life make a difference. They help the Canadian Cancer Society fund the most promising research projects in the country, provide information services and support programs in the community and advocate for public policies that prevent cancer and help those living with it. Help me support the fight against cancer by pledging me for my participation in the Canadian Cancer Society Relay for Life. It's easier than ever - just click the link at the bottom of this message.
If you would prefer to make a donation by cheque please make it payable to The Canadian Cancer Society, and mail it to me by May 30th. Thank you so much for your support of this event, , Tita DeMattos
