The National Bar Association is seeking applicants for the Crump Law Camp which was established for students entering the 9th through 11th grades and between the ages of 14 and 17 to introduce them to the judicial system. The goal of the NBA camp is to encourage young people at an early age to become lawyers and seek legal careers in the future. By 2050 more than half of the people in this country will be of color. More than 90% of the nation's lawyers are white, as are more than 80% of the students enrolled in law school. Yet more than 30% of the United States is comprised of people of color. The NBA is seeking applicants to attend this camp from every ethnic group and its selection process is non-discriminatory. The first inaugural two week camp was held during the summer at Howard University School of Law through a grant by the Ford Motor Company Fund in 2001. Campers were and will be housed on the Howard University campus and live in a protected camp environment. Open enrollment is available to students across the country but emphasis will be on enabling students from low income families to attend. Tuition for the camp will vary depending upon family income. The tuition covers transportation to and from Washington, D.C.; housing; meals; educational materials; and expenses for field trips. The camp provides students with an exciting academic and social agenda in the Washington, D. C. area. The competitive highlight of the camp is the Evett L. Simmons Mock Trial Competition. The four winners of this competition are invited to the NBA's Annual Convention. Camp begins July 11, 2010. Applications are available on the NBA website is www.Nationalbar.org and are to be mailed to the following address: National Bar Association Crump Law Camp P.O. Head Teacher for St. Stanislaus College, Guyana

Join Date: 10/01/07
Posts: 1,727

Earlier in 2009, the Head of the school retired, and a search was carried out within Guyana for a suitable replacement.  Unfortunately, the search has been unsuccessful to date.  Because of this, the Ministry of Education has agreed to a search for a candidate from outside of Guyana, and the Toronto Alumni Association has undertaken to lead (and work with the Board) in this external search.

 A formal job vacancy advertisement with all the relevant details is posted below

St. Stanislaus College is a secondary school, founded as a boys’ grammar school by Fr. Langton S. J. in 1866, in Georgetown, Guyana, South America.  Run by the English Jesuit Order of Catholic Priests, the College became co-educational in 1975, and was taken over by the Government in 1976, with Government-appointed teachers replacing the clergy in 1980.

The College prepares students for direct entry into the work-place and entry into University.  In the past, students sat the Oxford and Cambridge Ordinary (O) Level Examination and, if preparing for University, the London Advanced (A) Level Examination.  Today, these exams have been replaced respectively by the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) Examination and the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE), both of which are set by the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC).

The College currently has a student body numbering about 550.

HEAD TEACHER

The Guyana Ministry of Education is seeking a visionary and accomplished educational leader to fill the role of Head Teacher for St. Stanislaus College.

The Head Teacher must be able to develop and sustain the progress of the highest quality education at this school.  This individual must be an instructional leader with strong management, human relations, and operations skills, capable of creating innovative and long lasting reform in collaboration with the Ministry of Education.  The Head Teacher reports to the Board of Governors of the school.  This is a Contract position, the term of service being from a minimum of two (2) to a maximum of five (5) years.

Desirable qualifications:

• An educational leader who approaches his/her work with a progressive, experimental thinking style;

• A strategic planner who utilizes effective management for the efficient operation of the school;

• Knowledge of research-based best practices in curriculum design, professional development, and assessment of secondary education;

• An understanding of instructional practices that are responsive and relevant to the student population;

• Classroom and/or administrative experience in a large urban school district;

• Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.

Required Experience:

  Graduate in a specialized discipline recognized by the Ministry of Education for teaching purposes;

  Holder of a Professional Teacher’s Certificate or a Certificate / Diploma in Education;

• At least 5 years of teaching experience at the secondary school level;

  Served as Head or in a senior administrative post in a secondary school for no less than 5 years.

The salary is based on the local teachers’ scale, but a supplement will be provided, as necessary and negotiated, by the Alumni Associations.  The initial fare to and the final fare from Guyana, as well as suitable living accommodations in Guyana, will be provided.

To Apply:

All applicants must submit a letter of interest and a résumé with professional and academic qualifications to St. Stanislaus College Alumni Association Toronto, 4544 Sheppard Ave. E., Toronto, Ontario, Canada M1S 1V2.

Initial interviews will be conducted using, if necessary, VOIP technology like Skype, so applicants are expected to be conversant with and to have access to such technology.

Guyana, a country of exceptional natural beauty, is a splendid combination of the Caribbean and South America, with fascinating touches of a sometimes turbulent past.  Perched on the north-east corner of the South American continent, Guyana stretches 450 miles from its long Atlantic coastline into dense equatorial forest and the broad savannah of the Rupununi.

The picturesque capital and primary port is Georgetown, a city of fine colonial buildings, and broad, tree-lined boulevards.  The striking wooden architecture is reminiscent of Guyana's centuries as a Dutch and then a British colony.  Georgetown offers an evocative introduction to the land of Guyana.  Don't miss the imposing St. George's Cathedral, reputed to be the tallest wooden building in the world, and the Kaieteur Falls with the world’s highest single-drop water fall of 741 ft.

Guyana is evolving into a free market economy with tremendous opportunities for investment and growth.  Education, healthcare, the social and economic welfare of the population, and a strong joint services are some valued service commissions in Guyana, and it is only with good leaders at the helm can the younger generation be nurtured and moulded into successful leaders of tomorrow.

The University of Pennsylvania is launching an 18-month Academy focused on preparing Black males for admission to Ph.D. programs in education immediately upon completion of their undergraduate studies. They will begin the Academy this fall with 10 Black males who are in their junior year of college. Check it out here: http://www.gse.upenn.edu/blackmen

Each Academy participant will receive a 4-day all-expense paid visit to Philadelphia this fall; opportunities for meaningful engagement with the dean, faculty, graduate students, and Black male alumni; free enrollment in a 3-month Kaplan GRE Prep Course (for which Penn is paying $1,200 per participant); a current Black male Ph.D. student who will mentor him through the application process; and an application fee waiver when he applies for Fall 2011 admission to Penn (valued at $85). Black Male Teachers -Scholarship Opportunity
  Do you know any Black male s who are seniors in high school who want to
go to college out of state for FREE.  Several Black Colleges are looking
for future black male teachers and will send them to universities/colleges
for 4 years FREE.

The 'Call Me MISTER' program is an effort to address the critical shortage
of African American male teachers particularly among South  Carolinas
lowest performing public schools. Program participants are selected from
among under-served, socio-economically disadvantaged and educationally
at-risk communities.

The Call Me MISTER Program combines the special strengths and resources of
Clemson University with the individualized instructional programs offered
by four historically black colleges in South Carolina : Benedict College ,
Claflin University , Morris College and South Carolina State University .
To provide even greater opportunity and access, students have the option
of first attending one of our two-year partner colleges before
transferring to one of the four-year institutions to complete their
baccalaureate degree.  In addition, the project has limited enrollment in
the middle school Master of Art in Teaching program. Please click on the
participating schools on the menu to the left to learn more about these
schools' programs.

Aviation & Aerospace Cam p:
Do you know of any young person between the ages of 14-18 who may be
interested in pursuing a career in aviation or aerospace?  If so, OBAP the
Organization of Black Airline Pilots is sponsoring a camp from June 29th -
July 3rd 2009 at Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) in Manassas
Virginia .  The camp is open to all.

The purpose of the camp is to introduce interested youth to the world of
aviation by giving them "up close" exposure to the many challenging
careers and opportunities the aviation industry has to offer.
Participation in such a program wil l look extremely impressive on college
admissions applications!  Admission is selective and limited to only those
students who have a sincere interest.

For more information, please feel free read the attached information or
contact the camps Director, Robert Newkirk at 571-307-5599 or
newkirk@alum.mit.edu.

Application Deadline March 20, 2009

In June 2000 Joe Hall founded The Ghetto Film School (GFS) to connect
talented young people to artistic, educational and career opportunities in
the world of film and video. Since that time, more than 400 students have
participated in GFS programs and workshops, coming from all areas of New
York City to our South Bronx training facilities for hands-on production
and cinema studies courses. All GFS programs and activities are grounded
in three basic tenets of our pedagogy;

ASSETS-BASED teaching - recognizing the glass is also "half-full" with
today's urban youth - helps recognize and develop already existing
strengths while building skills and confidence to excel at new challenges;
CINEMA STUDIES support all production and technical training with an
appreciative, historical understanding of classic and contemporary cinema
- thereby expanding the student's professional vocabulary and mobility in
the field;

TRAVEL AND MULTIPLE DISTRIBUTION PLATFORMS celebrate the students and
their art - the annual GFS Public Screening is a major youth media event
in NYC, and our student work appeared in over 20 film festivals throughout
the country last year. GFS project shoots and screenings have brought our
student producers to Los Angeles , Germany , Mexico City , Paris and
dozens of universities throughout the United States .

GFS is an award-winning youth media organization (Mayor's Award for Arts
and Culture, Rush Philanthropic Arts for Life Award, and The Union Square
Award) and our students and their work have been featured on IFC TV, E!,
BBC's Talking Movies, ABC News Now, CNN News, The NY Times, The Huffington
Post and several film magazines.

2009 Law School Summer Boot Camp for Students of Colour

Join Date: 10/01/07
Posts: 1,727

Dates: Early Application: Completed by April 1; Late Application: after May 7; Applications Accepted till May 24

Having more lawyers' of color is essential to the well-being of the nation and of communities of color. In fact, a recent National Jurist Article, a journal for law students, talked about the disappearing black and Latino law student. This is particularly problematic. The power in this country is held by those who control the money and the law. The decreasing number of black and Mexican-American attorney is in fact a decrease in power.  The JD Project ( http://thejdproject.org/ )  is committed to reversing that trend. One our projects is to assure that entering law students of color do well in law school, particularly their first year. This is important so that they can maximize their career options and be prepared to give back to their community with legal knowledge, skills and support.

Everyone admitted to law school has demonstrated  similar intelligence, commitment and effort.   What distinguishes  "A" students is study skills and habits, access to legal information, analytical and test-taking skills.   All these are skills and abilities that can be learned and improved. In our more than 35 years of experience of helping students-of-color succeed, we have seen the impact that intense preparation can have on a student's ability to excel.  In a competitive environment, like law school, where grades are given based on how a person performs compared to the other students in the class, it is essential  that entering law students-of-color be appropriately prepared.

The  2009 Summer Boot Camp (  http://www.thejdproject.org/Excelling/BootCamp/index.htm  ) is an online distance learning program designed to provide that intense preparation.  The Boot Camp teaches students to study effectively for law school, introduces students to the writing, thinking and test-taking skills needed to excel on law school exams, and builds a network of academic support that crosses school boundaries.  The participants will work on the study skills, strategies and techniques they will need to achieve their goals as law students.

This is a 150 hour online program which costs $750 including $150 materials fee. Other programs, like BarBri cost $2000 for a 40 hour program.

Admission is on a rolling basis till the program is filled.  If you know a black, Latino, Asian, Native American person who is planning to go to law school in the fall 2009, please forward this email to them.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact Ms. Brenda Randall, Volunteer Administrator, admin@thejdproject.org.

FAA Hiring Notice

If you have or know kids between the ages of 18-31 with a high school
diploma, the Federal Aviation Association is taking applications for air
traffic controller school. We all have kids and know kids in the right age
group (under 31) and with some effort they could reach a salary of over
$100,000 with benefits in about 3 years! You need only a high school
diploma to apply and credit is given for college on the exam.
They need to go to
http://www.faa.gov/jobs/job_opportunities/airtraffic_controllers/
http://www.faa.gov/jobs/job_opportunities/airtraffic_controllers/;
http://www.faa.gov/jobs/job_opportunities/airtraffic_controllers/>;
http://www.faa.gov/jobs/job_opportunities/airtraffic_controllers/%3E>;

for details and to fill out the application immediately - even if they don't
know if! They'd w ant to attend immediately - it's the federal government
and it may take them months to call.
The key is to apply NOW.
There will be a lot of retirements coming up rather quickly and they
need! To line up training to accommodate these openings.
It's my understanding that the FAA rarely has an open application
such as this and that the jobs are coveted. The person who
shared this has a 28 year old daughter who is well into 6 figures and has plenty of time
for travel/recreation and has started another career on the side. This is a
great opportunity and it should be noted that choosing a site like
Anchorage or Indianapolis to train is a likely acceptance
into the Training program - after-which you can transfer anywhere in the country
that has a tower.

Speaking of opportunities.  Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending the 2007 FIRST Robotics Competition at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta and
found myself among lots of brilliant children/mentors/professionals from around the world.  By the way FIRST means  "For Inspiration and
Recognition of Science and Technology."   The competition was truly very stiff and really very interesting.

The young people and their mentors are required to solve a common problem in a six-week timeframe using a standard "kit of parts" and
a common set of rules.  The teams build robots from the parts and enter them in a series of competitions designed by Dean Kamen, Dr. Woodie Flowers, and a committee of engineers and other professionals, and the winners of this competition are awarded grants/scholarship monies to
continue along the path of engineering, computer science, electronics, animation, digital design, aeronautics and many other technological fields.

It was truly amazing to see the machines these kids put together and what the machines were capable of doing.  Because of the kind of amazing
work that comes out of this competition FIRST is now aligned with The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) an agency
of the United States Department of Defense responsible for the development of new technology for use by the military and National Aeronautics
and Space Administration (NASA) who are funneling lots of monies into FIRST while also recruiting some of these young people.

If your kids are truly passionate about Math and Science, FIRST is certainly an organization worth investigating so that your kids can be encouraged
to continue along that line while enjoying science and technology.
