Guyana, a country of exceptional natural beauty, is a splendid combination of the Caribbean and South America, with fascinating touches of a sometimes turbulent past. Perched on the north-east corner of the South American continent, Guyana stretches 450 miles from its long Atlantic coastline into dense equatorial forest and the broad savannah of the Rupununi.
The picturesque capital and primary port is Georgetown, a city of fine colonial buildings, and broad, tree-lined boulevards. The striking wooden architecture is reminiscent of Guyana's centuries as a Dutch and then a British colony. Georgetown offers an evocative introduction to the land of Guyana. Don't miss the imposing St. George's Cathedral, reputed to be the tallest wooden building in the world, and the Kaieteur Falls with the world’s highest single-drop water fall of 741 ft.
Guyana is evolving into a free market economy with tremendous opportunities for investment and growth. Education, healthcare, the social and economic welfare of the population, and a strong joint services are some valued service commissions in Guyana, and it is only with good leaders at the helm can the younger generation be nurtured and moulded into successful leaders of tomorrow.

Since that time, more than 400 students have participated in GFS programs and workshops, coming from all areas of New York City to our South Bronx training facilities for hands-on production and cinema studies courses. All GFS programs and activities are grounded in three basic tenets of our pedagogy;
ASSETS-BASED teaching - recognizing the glass is also "half-full" with today's urban youth - helps recognize and develop already existing strengths while building skills and confidence to excel at new challenges; CINEMA STUDIES support all production and technical training with an appreciative, historical understanding of classic and contemporary cinema - thereby expanding the student's professional vocabulary and mobility in the field;
TRAVEL AND MULTIPLE DISTRIBUTION PLATFORMS celebrate the students and their art - the annual GFS Public Screening is a major youth media event in NYC, and our student work appeared in over 20 film festivals throughout the country last year. GFS project shoots and screenings have brought our student producers to Los Angeles , Germany , Mexico City , Paris and dozens of universities throughout the United States .
GFS is an award-winning youth media organization (Mayor's Award for Arts and Culture, Rush Philanthropic Arts for Life Award, and The Union Square Award) and our students and their work have been featured on IFC TV, E!, BBC's Talking Movies, ABC News Now, CNN News, The NY Times, The Huffington Post and several film magazines.

Having more lawyers' of color is essential to the well-being of the nation and of communities of color. In fact, a recent National Jurist Article, a journal for law students, talked about the disappearing black and Latino law student. This is particularly problematic. The power in this country is held by those who control the money and the law. The decreasing number of black and Mexican-American attorney is in fact a decrease in power. The JD Project ( http://thejdproject.org/ ) is committed to reversing that trend. One our projects is to assure that entering law students of color do well in law school, particularly their first year. This is important so that they can maximize their career options and be prepared to give back to their community with legal knowledge, skills and support.
Everyone admitted to law school has demonstrated similar intelligence, commitment and effort. What distinguishes "A" students is study skills and habits, access to legal information, analytical and test-taking skills. All these are skills and abilities that can be learned and improved. In our more than 35 years of experience of helping students-of-color succeed, we have seen the impact that intense preparation can have on a student's ability to excel. In a competitive environment, like law school, where grades are given based on how a person performs compared to the other students in the class, it is essential that entering law students-of-color be appropriately prepared.
The 2009 Summer Boot Camp ( http://www.thejdproject.org/Excelling/BootCamp/index.htm ) is an online distance learning program designed to provide that intense preparation. The Boot Camp teaches students to study effectively for law school, introduces students to the writing, thinking and test-taking skills needed to excel on law school exams, and builds a network of academic support that crosses school boundaries. The participants will work on the study skills, strategies and techniques they will need to achieve their goals as law students.
This is a 150 hour online program which costs $750 including $150 materials fee. Other programs, like BarBri cost $2000 for a 40 hour program.
Admission is on a rolling basis till the program is filled. If you know a black, Latino, Asian, Native American person who is planning to go to law school in the fall 2009, please forward this email to them.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact Ms. Brenda Randall, Volunteer Administrator, admin@thejdproject.org.

Speaking of opportunities. Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending the 2007 FIRST Robotics Competition at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta and found myself among lots of brilliant children/mentors/professionals from around the world. By the way FIRST means "For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology." The competition was truly very stiff and really very interesting.
The young people and their mentors are required to solve a common problem in a six-week timeframe using a standard "kit of parts" and a common set of rules. The teams build robots from the parts and enter them in a series of competitions designed by Dean Kamen, Dr. Woodie Flowers, and a committee of engineers and other professionals, and the winners of this competition are awarded grants/scholarship monies to continue along the path of engineering, computer science, electronics, animation, digital design, aeronautics and many other technological fields.
It was truly amazing to see the machines these kids put together and what the machines were capable of doing. Because of the kind of amazing work that comes out of this competition FIRST is now aligned with The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) an agency of the United States Department of Defense responsible for the development of new technology for use by the military and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) who are funneling lots of monies into FIRST while also recruiting some of these young people.
If your kids are truly passionate about Math and Science, FIRST is certainly an organization worth investigating so that your kids can be encouraged to continue along that line while enjoying science and technology.
